Gerontology

Gerontology is the study of ageing processes and people as they grow from middle age through older adulthood. It concerns research, education and practice in the field of ageing. The pillars of the discipline of gerontology are biology, medicine, and social/behavioural with significant contributions from many other diverse areas of study for example, public policy, advocacy and economics.

Therefore gerontology is a multidisciplinary field where age-related professionals, or gerontologists, stem from a broad range of professions and disciplines such as architecture, anthropology, dentistry, medicine, nursing, nutrition, optometry, occupational therapy, psychiatry, psychology, physiotherapy, public health, social work, sociology and others.
